General Motors (GM) is investing $390 million in Kansas for next-gen Chevy Bolt EV production.
Last week, General Motors announced that it would end Chevy Malibu production, one of the last gas-powered sedans Chevrolet offers in the United States. The Chevy Malibu has been in production since the 1960s, but GM has decided to shift its focus to crossover or sport utility vehicles and electric vehicles (EVs).
The legacy automaker plans to end Chevy Malibu production by November 2024. It also plans to pause Cadillac XT4 production at its Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas City until January 2025.
General Motors plans to modify its Kansas City assembly plant for the next-generation Chevy Bolt EV and Cadillac XT4. The traditional OEM intends to produce the new Chevy Bolt EV and Cadillac XT4 on the same assembly line in the Fairfax Assembly Plant.
Kansas isn’t the only state GM is investing in for EV production. In April 2024, the legacy automaker committed to building a $3.5 billion battery plant in Indiana. General Motors started preparing the battery plant’s site for heavy construction. The battery plant will help GM build Ultium batteries.
General Motors initially collaborated with LG on the Indiana-based battery plant. However, its partnership with LG fell through. Instead, GM is collaborating with Samsung SDI on the project.
General Motors is reportedly negotiating a license agreement with China-based CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd) for its LFP battery technology. GM and CATL are discussing a potential joint battery factory in North America.
