Polestar 2 Driver’s Minor Run-In With Deer Ends In $21,000 Repair Estimate

Fender benders and collisions with animals on the road are unfortunate incidents that can happen at times. In the case of one Polestar 2 driver, it was the latter—a collision with a deer—that led them to the body shop. Interestingly, the shock they experienced during the deer collision might pale in comparison to the one they encountered when presented with the repair bill. The shop quoted them over $21,000 to address what initially appeared to be minor damage.

Reddit user Stock-Exchange1761 doesn’t delve into the specifics of the crash, simply mentioning that they collided with a deer. What they did instead was show off the resulting damage which itself doesn’t appear to be too rough. Upon closer inspection, some details begin to pop out.

The Polestar EV’s bumper is pushed back and the headlight is damaged too. The hood, wheel, and fender each have some damage. Interestingly, the breakdown doesn’t include a number of vital electrical parts that lie beneath the skin. Instead, the vast majority of the $21,544.82 total is labor, 90.2 hours of it to be exact. On the other hand, $10,775.40 of the gross total is parts.

In this case, part of that labor is taking the time to safely de-energize the EV drivetrain. Many hours are quoted for work like repairing the front apron, refinishing the hood, and replacing the upper tie bar. This sort of mind-boggling repair bill might be commonplace in the not-too-distant future.

Carscoops has documented how vehicles are becoming more expensive to repair. For one thing, EVs like the Polestar 2 can be more costly because of the way batteries integrate into the vehicle. Even internal combustion cars can run up an expensive bill due to pricey electronic components like LED lights, radar sensors, lidar components, and more.

One commenter on the post mentioned a similar accident in an Acura RDX that cost north of $13k including a $4,000 headlight. Thankfully, this is exactly the kind of situation where insurance pays off and the poster in this case says that’s exactly what happened. Be safe out there.
