Malaysian law actually allows vehicle owners to modify their license plate as long they don’t do something wild like, say, make it smaller than a finger nail, which is just what one motorcycle rider did

Malaysian Motorcyclist Goes Viral After Being Ticketed For “World’s Smallest” License Plate

Throughout the entire month of September, Malaysian police are conducting a special operation aimed at cracking down on illegal activities involving motorcycles. Surprisingly, on just the second day of the operation, September 2, the police came across what might be the most amusing offense of the month.

Authorities have released photos of what locals are calling the smallest license plate on earth. Measuring smaller than a fingernail, this miniature license tag was affixed to the rear of a Yamaha motorcycle, though the identity the rider has not been disclosed.

Surprisingly, the issue didn’t stem from the motorcyclist tampering with their license plate, as Malaysian law does permit certain modifications. However, the government’s chillness stops when those “improvements” render the numbers and letters illegible.

The police did not reveal what punishment the rider received for their improperly modified license plate, but did say that as of September 2, they had checked as many as 1,302 motorcycles, more than 200 of which were confiscated. Additionally, 642 fines had already been issued to riders for various offenses, including not wearing helmets and disregarding traffic light signals.

“The strategy of enforcement action is to educate the road user community to always obey the rules and be prudent while driving and to instill safe values to control attitudes and avoid risk and negligence,” the police force wrote on its social media page, as translated by the site. “JPJ also advises motorcycle riders to always obey the laws & regulations of the road and be tolerant with other road users for the sake of safety priority while on the road.”

Naturally, the photos of the minuscule license plate (whose numbers were pixelated out) quickly went viral online, with one commenter humorously saying that only Papa Smurf would be able to read it. Unfortunately for the rider, police do tend to take this kind of thing seriously, with local outlets reporting that in April, a 25-year-old rider was arrested for using a plate that read “love you” in Malay.
