Thieves In Stolen Audi Raid Through Canada Mall In GTA-Style Heist

York Regional Police, who serve an area just north of Toronto, Canada, are looking for a pair of suspects involved in a crime that’s straight out of the Grand Theft Auto V.

The pair, no description of whom could be furnished by police because they were wearing hoods, drove a stolen 2011 Audi A4 through the entrance of the Vaughan Mills mall at around 1:30 a.m. Video footage from the crime scene shows the car calmly driving through the hallways of the mall, carefully avoiding all of the kiosks, and then driving back out again, through another entrance.

Police say that the pair stole a quantity of electronics while they were in the mall and, despite their careful driving, committed a large amount of property damage during their late night visit. York Regional Police Sergeant Clint Whitney described the crime as “audacious” and “remarkable,” per the CBC.

“Whether it’s ridiculous or it’s just brazen, it’s unacceptable, too,” Sergeant Whitney said. “People work in this mall. There’s going to be cleaners. There’s going to be security personnel. We’re just fortunate that nobody was hurt, that it’s property damage only. Nonetheless, it’s significant property damage and it’s loss of property. And we take it seriously.”

Following the incident, police recovered the Audi at an undisclosed location and released a description of it, including its license plate number. In the wake of the release, Taylor-Anna Kobinger, of Laval (just north of Montreal), in the neighboring province of Quebec, came forward as the owner of the vehicle. She told CP24 that she was shocked to discover that her A4 had been involved in a crime more than 340 miles (550 km) away.

Kobinger told the outlet, though, that her vehicle had been stolen on January 29, just a few days before the crime occurred. She had listed the car for sale on Facebook marketplace, and a man responded to her ad.

While looking over the car, he asked for two test drives. On the first, he behaved normally, but on the second, she said, he began driving aggressively. Kobinger asked to take over as driver, but when she got out of the car in order to switch seats with the man, he drove away.

That will likely be added to the tally of charges that the suspects involved in this crime face, which include breaking and entering, mischief to property, dangerous driving, and possession of stolen property, according to York Regional Police.
