Corvette Driver Nabbed Doing 150 MPH In A 65 Zone

by Stephen Rivers

One driver in Texas just went from enjoying his Corvette to sitting in a jail cell. Officers of the Splendora Police Department caught him going at speeds in excess of 150 mph (241 km/h). Once he pulled over, authorities took him straight to jail and impounded the burly V8 sports car.

In a photograph posted by the department, we see the car in question, a seventh-generation Corvette. It’s impossible to say whether or not the specific Corvette is modified. A base C7 is by no means slow, offering 430 hp, a 0-60 mph in 4 seconds, and a 190 mph top speed.

To be perfectly honest, on a race track with no traffic, there’s little hope that a Dodge Charger police cruiser could’ve caught up to the Chevrolet. That led many in the peanut gallery of the department’s post to say that rather than police catching this speeder, the speeder let himself be caught. Certainly, videos like the one from September where a similar Corvette leaves police in the dust lend credence to that attitude.

US Highway 59 is well-known to locals for its wide open nature and the potential for high speeds. At 150 mph, the driver was driving at more than twice the legal limit of 65 mph.

In Texas, most municipalities issue tickets in excess of $300 for driving anywhere above 30 mph over the speed limit. In this case, it’s clear that the driver was also cited for Reckless Driving, a misdemeanor in the state. Those convicted of reckless driving face up to 30 days in jail and or a maximum fine of $200.
