Russia could use Chinese platform to revive Moskvich brand, report says

Europe

Russia could resume production of the Soviet-era Moskvich brand using a Chinese platform from automaker JAC in partnership with truckmaker Kamaz, two sources said.

Kamaz is in talks with its partner, China’s JAC, about using its design, engineering and production platform to produce the brand, the sources told Reuters.

Kamaz and Moskvich declined to comment.

Moskvich is set to make a comeback in Russia as Moscow takes over assets belonging to Renault, after the French automaker said it was selling its majority stake in AvtoVAZ to a Russian science institute amid Weestern sanctions on Russia following the country’s invasion of Ukraine.

The new Moskvich model would be built at Renault’s former Moscow factory.

Russian business daily Vedomosti, which first reported the news on Thursday, cited a source as saying that production would begin no later than the fourth quarter of this year.
