Woman Dies After Crashing Dodge Challenger During Alleged Street Race With Ford Mustang

  • Police blame street racing for the death of a 46-year-old woman driving her Dodge Challenger.
  • She drove into oncoming traffic and hit a Chrysler Sebring head-on.
  • The accident sent five others to the hospital as well.

Racing is an inherently dangerous activity but the peril is higher when it takes place on public roads. While many street races end as innocuously as they begin, they can turn tragic in the blink of an eye. That’s exactly what police say happened in Henderson, Kentucky.

Speaking to the Courier&Press, Sgt. Bill Russell stated that a 46-year-old woman named Kelly Green was driving a Dodge Challenger with one passenger seated alongside her before the alleged street race with a Ford Mustang.

At one point during the street competition, the Mustang purportedly swerved into the Challenger’s lane. Subsequently, the Dodge driver swerved into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a Chrysler Sebring.

The Henderson Police Department says it needed to extricate subjects from both the Dodge and the Chrysler. ive people were transported to Henderson Deaconess Hospital, and a sixth individual later went to Evansville Hospital. Tragically, the driver of the Challenger, Kelly Green, succumbed to her injuries.

Evidently, the street where the accident happened, S. Green Street, is known for speeding.

“We don’t have a whole lot of accidents there, but we do have a lot of speeding,” said HPD Sergeant Bill Russell to 14 News. “We’re going to up our patrol in the area and try to get people to slow down, especially with all the construction coming on.”

The Mustang driver wasn’t involved in the crash but police say that they returned and provided a statement about what happened. It’s unclear if they’re facing any charges related to the event.

Photos from the scene show the Dodge about as mangled as it possibly could be. The B-pillar is pushed far back toward the rear of the car and the front driver’s side wheel and tire are loose and lying on the ground. Frankly, given the extent of the damage, it’s shocking that more people didn’t die in this crash.

Let it be a reminder to all of us that racing is for the track. Accidents can still happen there but the chances of something like this are almost zero.
