GPS Made Me Do It: Clueless DoorDash Driver Takes Dirt Path Straight Into A Pond

A driver in Massachusetts is now the owner of a soggy Toyota as they drove their vehicle into a body of water while allegedly following GPS directions.

In the latest case of ‘GPS made me do it,’ the Middleton Police Department said they received a call from a DoorDash delivery driver who said they were in the process of delivering a Dunkin Donuts order. They were reportedly being aided by a navigation system, which instructed them to drive down a dirt road. The driver then “somehow ended up driving into a body of water.”

Of course, that “somehow” is likely not paying attention to their surroundings. Regardless, the driver was able to exit the vehicle, walk out of the woods, and go to a nearby house.

When police arrived, the driver – who reportedly had the Dunkin Donuts order in hand – was “panicked” and “claiming that their vehicle was underwater.” Officers and fire fighters began searching for the vehicle and ultimately found it on a “dirt path,” running and partially submerged.

The driver was eventually transported to a local hospital and the vehicle was towed from the scene, which apparently turned out to be a pond in someone’s yard as authorities said “the homeowner was notified and arrived on scene a few moments later.”

Police said the driver will be charged with negligent operation of a motor vehicle and that a “Request for Immediate Threat License Suspension” was filed with the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles. The latter seems like an extreme reaction as it’s for drivers who have committed a violation so extreme authorities “believe that his/her continued operation will be so seriously improper as to constitute him/her an immediate threat to the public safety.”

Authorities didn’t say why they pushed for the license suspension, but it sounds like ‘bad directions’ might not have been the only thing at play.
