The Ford Mustang is definitely not a sand-proof vehicle, as this man found out

Tourist Goes Off-Roading In A Rental Shelby Mustang GT-H, Gets Stuck

Getting stuck in the sand is not a fun experience, especially if the vehicle you’re driving wasn’t designed for this type of terrain. A tourist in Utah learned it first-hand after trying to explore the off-road trails in a Mustang rental.

The vehicle in question is a Shelby Mustang GT-H Convertible from Hertz’s fleet, which ended up scraping its belly on rocks when the driver mistakenly took it for a spin on deep sand. The wide tires couldn’t find enough traction to make it to the other side of the gravel road, so the tourist eventually gave up and called for help.

Thankfully, Matt’s Off Road Recovery was within reach, undertaking another vehicle rescue mission. The team arrived in an off-road prepped Jeep Cherokee with all the equipment to safely tow the Mustang on safe grounds. Unfortunately, the pony car doesn’t come with recovery points on the front bumper, so Matt Wetzel had to get more creative, mounting the rope to the front suspension.

After investigating the surface under the vehicle, it was clear that the only way to go was forwards, as the Borla exhaust was resting on a rock. Thankfully, the process didn’t take too much time and the Shelby got unstuck. The driver got rewarded with a special T-Shirt after Matt warned him not to drive the Mustang on the sand ever again. Hopefully, the damage on the underside is not that serious, although the vehicle will certainly need to be thoroughly checked and cleaned before Hertz hands its keys to the next customer.

Most of us – including myself – have a few embarrassing stories to share when it comes to getting stuck, but at least they don’t include an RWD pony car. Admittedly, the sporty-looking Shelby Mustang GT-H shouldn’t be the first vehicle of choice for those planning to drive off the beaten track. Still, rental cars are famous for doing all sorts of things independently of the vehicle type.
