Brand-New Model Y Owner Discovers Tesla’s Quality Control Is Lacking

Another example of Tesla’s poor quality control appeared online when an owner of a new Model Y posted photos of an improperly aligned door seal that caused aerodynamic noise when the car was in motion.

While driving back home right after taking delivery of the brand-new Model Y Long Range, the owner heard excessive noise as if a window was open. However, not having any prior experience with EVs, he initially thought it was due to the lack of “engine noise”.

The issue persisted for the next couple of days, prompting the owner to make sure all doors opened and closed properly and all window seals were in place, which is how he noticed the defect. The exterior molding above the driver’s window was visibly warped, as opposed to the other side which was completely flush with the bodywork.

In the photos shared by user zagman76 on the Tesla Lounge thread on Reddit, we can see the black plastic seal protruding from the driver’s door in an abnormal manner. Some commenters asked the owner how did he miss something like that during delivery, only for him to reply that it wasn’t as prominent in the pre-acceptance walkaround and probably got worse later on.

According to zagman76, a visit to a Tesla Service Center will be required in order to resolve the issue under warranty, although it sounds like an easy fix. For those wondering, he tried pushing the plastic in position by himself, but it didn’t work as “there’s definitely something not right with how it’s seated”. As noted by other Tesla owners, improper fitment of the window trim is likely what caused the issue in the first place, and no amount of “pushing in or fidgeting” could help.

In any case, Tesla should pay more attention to inspecting all new vehicles for possible defects, as it is not the customer’s job to check them in great detail. A user asked the rhetorical question: “How does that even pass inspection” getting the humorous but relevant reply “What is this inspection you speak of?” from a fellow Redditor.
