Quick Thinking Deputies Rescue Bear Trapped In Subaru Outback

by Michael Gauthier

Deputies from Nevada’s Washoe County Sheriff’s Office had a bear of a time removing an unwanted passenger from a Subaru Outback.

Noting “you never know what a call may bring,” the department released video of deputies responding to a call about a bear that had become stuck in a vehicle. While there’s no word on how this occurred, it happens from time to time.

After some brainstorming, they got a long yellow rope and tied it around the rear passenger door handle. Deputies then got far away from the wagon and gave the rope a tug. This was enough to open the rear door and the bear quickly exited the vehicle.

The clip then gives us a look at the aftermath as the bear shredded the headliner and ripped off the rear passenger side door panel. The B-pillar trim was also damaged, but things could have been much worse as part of the rear seat was folded down and this seems to have protected the leather.

The Sheriff’s Office said, “Spring is an active time for our Tahoe bear population and a good reminder to be bear-aware when enjoying the beautiful outdoors.” They went on to remind visitors and residents to avoid leaving food in cars and be mindful of food wrappers, coolers, and other scented items in vehicles as they could entice bears to get a closer look.
