The driver of a heavily-modified Ford Mustang has been lucky to avoid injury after crashing the muscle car during TX2K23, a popular drag racing event in the United States. The driver should also be thanking his lucky stars that he didn’t take out a Lamborghini Huracan that he was racing at the time.

The accident occurred during a roll race between the Mustang and a Huracan and while we don’t have details about the two cars in question, it seems evident that both have benefited from a series of mechanical modifications, making them significantly quicker than standard models.

Footage captured by 1320video shows that shortly after the race got underway, the driver of the blue Mustang lost control. We can see the rear end kick out before the car proceeds to slide to the right, cutting directly into the path of the Lamborghini. The pony car then slams into the crash barrier on the side of the track, completely destroying its front end.

It’s unclear just how fast the Ford was traveling at the time of the crash but it was clearly covering ground very quickly. In fact, it only came to a stop after spinning around three times and striking the wall on three separate occasions.

While it would be easy to blame a lack of driving skills for the crash, 1320video reports that the Mustang dropped a bunch of water in the moments before the crash, noting that this probably caused it to lose traction and slide out of control. The driver of the Huracan was only able to avoid damage by stamping on the brake pedal as soon as he saw the driver of the Mustang start to lose control.

The driver of the Lamborghini also limited the likelihood of being taken out by his rival by taking off slightly later than the Mustang driver, allowing the Ford to get a slight head start. Had both cars crossed the start line and began accelerating at the same time, the Mustang may have slid directly into the side of the Italian supercar.
