Axe-cellent Parenting? Spanish Dad Smashes Son’s BMW To Stop Him From Drunk Driving

A weird expression of fatherly love occurred last week in Logrono, Spain, where a man vandalized his son’s BMW 3 Series Coupe with a pickaxe in an effort to prevent him from driving under the influence.

The Longrono Police made the incident public and shared a photo of the aftermath on social media. According to the report, residents informed the police about a man damaging a parked car on February 26. When the police arrived at the scene, they witnessed an SUV fleeing at full speed. A patrol vehicle stopped the off-roader nearby and officers identified two occupants: the 32-year-old owner of the BMW in the passenger seat and his father in the driver’s seat.

After talking to the suspects, officers learned the backstory. The father had tried to convince his son that he was too drunk to drive, but the son disagreed and refused to give him the keys to the BMW. The argument escalated and the older of the two got in some kind of Gran Theft Auto mode, smashing the car with a pickaxe.

The damaged vehicle is a blue BMW 3 Series Coupe E92 (2006-2013) with aftermarket alloy wheels and lowered suspension. The photo of the aftermath suggests there is a lot of broken glass, dented body panels, damaged wheels, and flat tires, likely resulting in a hefty repair bill. As reported by our colleagues at Periodismo Del Motor, the man is accused of vandalism, which could result in a fine.

While the father’s intentions may have been good, there are other and less violent ways of immobilizing a vehicle. We hope that the 32-year-old BMW owner learned his lesson and will not drive under the influence in the future. Next time he goes out for a drink, he can safely return home in a taxi.
