Another 2023 Corvette Z06 Engine Dies, Chevy Promptly Replaces It In Two Weeks

by Brad Anderson

Remember the guy who drove his 2023 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 just 52 miles before the engine died? Well, as it turns out, he isn’t the only new Z06 owner to have experienced an engine failure.

The owner of a separate Z06, finished in Amplify Orange, recently took to YouTube to share the story of how his Corvette’s engine failed after 621 miles (999 km). Fortunately, his story has a happy ending.

Footage from a rear-facing GoPro on the Z06 at the time of the engine troubles shows the owner pushing it to its limits, hitting the throttle through to redline and performing plenty of aggressive downshifts. However, it’s not anything the 5.5-liter naturally-aspirated V8 shouldn’t be able to handle but as the owner slowed down to a stop sign, the engine started giving him serious issues. He immediately made a U-turn before the engine shut down.

It was soon discovered that there was a misfire on cylinders 1, 2, 7, and 8. The owner says that he closely followed the recommended break-in period of 500 miles (800 km) where using full throttle should be avoided, the car should not be revved to beyond 4,000 rpm, it should not be driven at a constant speed such as when using cruise control, nor should owners downshift if the revs will spike to over 4,000 rpm.

Fortunately for the owner, Rich Hendrick City Chevrolet in Charlotte, North Carolina was happy to replace the engine and did so in just a matter of two weeks.

While the Z06 does have a 500-mile break-in period, the owner’s manual actually recommends following break-in guidelines for the first 1,500 miles (2,414 km) and notes that owners shouldn’t participate in “track events, sport driving schools, or similar activities” during this period.
