Car theft rings are nothing new, but the latest operation busted in Detroit took things to another level. Police have arrested two men linked to a scheme that spanned Macomb, Oakland, and Genesee counties. The suspects, David Franklin and Barron Hatcher Jr., seemed to have a particular taste for the Dodge Durango, allegedly making off with no fewer than 25 of them.

Authorities began investigating the thefts in November 2024, suspecting Franklin and Hatcher Jr. of targeting Dodge dealerships and stealing multiple Durangos at once using a key programming device called an AutoProPad. The investigation led to the arrest of 24-year-old Barron Hatcher Jr. on January 30 in Farmington Hills. Meanwhile, 41-year-old David Franklin was apprehended in Houston, Texas, before being extradited to Michigan.

Both men have been charged with possession of burglary tools and conducting a criminal enterprise, two felonies that carry a combined maximum penalty of 30 years in prison. Hatcher Jr.’s bond was posted at $500,000, while Franklin’s is $1 million. In the unlikely event that either can post bond, they’ll be required to wear a GPS tether to track their movements.

According to the Detroit News, the thefts reportedly occurred between June and November of last year, with several of the stolen Dodge SUVs now recovered.

Rising Vehicle Thefts in Michigan

Michigan is grappling with a surge in vehicle thefts. Between 2019 and 2023, car thefts increased by 56%, prompting the state’s Attorney General’s Office to expand an auto insurance fraud task force to also target stolen vehicles. Authorities hope this move will help curb the growing problem.

The lead foot of the Dodge Challenger Scat Pack driver caused them to spin out several times.
Towards the end of the chase, the Challenger slammed directly into the front of a police car.

All V8 Dodge Challenger models pack a serious punch, and if you try and drive one with the traction control turned off, you better have some good throttle discipline, or else you could end up like the moron behind the wheel of this Challenger. Try as they might to flee from police officers, all the driver could do was spectacularly spin the muscle car.

This clip was recently shared to Reddit and it makes for very, very entertaining viewing. It opens with a police cruiser in hot pursuit of a Challenger, which appears to be a Scat Pack model. As the Dodge and the police car begin to merge onto a motorway, the driver of the Challenger pins the throttle.

This immediately kicks out the tail of the car, and the driver, unable to correct the slide, hits the curb on the side of the road and spins around to the left on a patch of grass. The police officer then pulls in front of the car, likely hoping the driver would call it quits and give up. But the driver didn’t. Instead, the Dodge driver floored the throttle once again, attempting to powerslide around the rear of the police car.

Moments later, the Challenger comes back into view, and this time, the driver loses control while spinning to the left, briefly coming to a stop in the center of the motorway. They hit the gas once again, immediately breaking traction and spinning around in a circle directly in front of the police cruiser. They then accelerate once more and, this time, slam straight into the nose of the cop car.

The video cuts out shortly after, and it’s unclear what happened next. Hopefully, officers on the scene were able to apprehend the driver.

Just when you thought your inbox had reached peak desperation, with pitches from fuel additives that turn your car into a neutron star and “entrepreneurs” posing next to rented Lamborghinis with stock photos so bad even the watermark looks embarrassed, along comes the Maverick. It looks like an 8-year-old’s fever dream of a Corvette cosplaying as an F/A-18 fighter jet.

And yes, some “European company” named Mxtrem swears they’re dreaming of building 12 of them worldwide. They even promise a prototype by May, apparently planning to beat Elon Musk’s mythical flying Roadster to the punch. Of course, that’s assuming Musk’s Roadster exists anywhere outside of quarterly result videos, which, to be fair, makes it the perfect competition for the Maverick.

Now, the kid in all of us can’t help but love the absurdity. But the “company” behind it? That’s another story. Mxtrem doesn’t list an address on its website, and its press release vaguely describes it as “a newly established European company with a skilled team that has over 20 years of experience in designing and producing bespoke carbon fiber automobiles.” Which part of Europe, exactly? Good question. We reached out and will let you know if they respond. Oh, and they also have an Instagram page that’s a whole day old.

For what it’s worth, up until at least July of 2024, the same website was linked to “MIISHANY,” a creator who was busy making 3D NFT renders that look suspiciously similar to the Maverick, but for the Metaverse. Coincidence? Your guess is as good as ours.

Fighter Jet Fever Dream

We’ve seen cars inspired by fighter jets in the past, with the Lamborghini Reventon springing to mind. However, that Lambo is nowhere near as extreme as the Maverick. Every single piece of the Corvette has been digitally replaced with new carbon fiber panels designed to mimic features of a jet.

The nose has a sharp new bumper housing massive air intakes that include miniature missile replicas, like those found under the wings of a jet. Mxtrem has also designed distinctive air louvers for the front quarter panels, and transformed the ‘Vette’s rear haunches. There are new intakes, jet-inspired wings, and two vertical fins just like an F/A-18. There are even fake jet thrusters out back, more fake missiles, and a wild diffuser.

The interior is just as over-the-top. Mxtrem wants to chop off the top and bottom of the steering wheel, transforming it into a jet-style yoke. They’re also planning to swap out one of the cupholders for a replica joystick, as nothing says “daily driver” like pretending to fire missiles at rush hour traffic.

Details like where in Europe they’re based or how much this fever dream will cost? Not important, apparently. But they did say it’ll be available for the Stingray, E-Ray, and Z06 models. Of course, given all these unanswered questions, it’s entirely possible this thing will never leave the digital realm.

A Florida man crashed into a BMW dealership showroom in Gainesville on Tuesday.
He was reportedly upset after failing a credit check when attempting to buy an M4 CS.
The crash resulted in approximately $60,000 in damage as well as criminal charges.

The legend of Florida man continues to grow as a 20-year-old went to a BMW dealership in Gainesville to buy a new M4 CS, a 543-horsepower coupe that costs north of $125,000. However, he reportedly freaked out after failing to pass a credit check and was denied the opportunity for a test drive.

While nobody likes being told they’re not worthy, Kevin Leiman didn’t brush it off. Instead, WCJB reports he attempted to grab the car keys as he was leaving. Dealership employees were able to prevent this, so Leiman went back to his car empty handed.

He reportedly sat in his vehicle for a little bit, before circling the building twice. Leiman then reportedly floored it and crashed into the showroom. After exiting his vehicle, he allegedly continued looking for the keys to the M4 CS.

Leiman couldn’t find them, so he left on foot and was eventually stopped by police. Authorities arrested him for grand theft auto and criminal mischief, and believe he caused around $60,000 in damage to the dealership. On the bright side, no one was injured and the building didn’t suffer any structural damage.

A Bimmerpost user uploaded a picture of the aftermath and it shows stunned employees standing around the showroom, which is covered in broken glass. They added he almost hit the M4 CS and said the car “probably [suffered] some damage to the paint from the glass shards.”

While that’s relatively minor considering the overall destruction, the user shared the VIN number of the car and it’s listed by the dealership for $129,175. That’s not cheap, but it now has quite an interesting story.

Maryland is suing three drivers with extensive violation records to reduce dangerous driving.
Each driver accumulated dozens of speeding tickets and other offenses, owing at least $27,882.
It’s unclear if the state plans to suspend their licenses or attempt to take away their cars.

It turns out that in Maryland, you can rack up dozens of high-risk traffic violations and still keep your driver’s license. That’s the big takeaway from a trio of new lawsuits against some remarkably reckless drivers. Each of the three individuals named in these suits has at least 84 traffic infractions—and yet, all of them still have valid licenses. Now, the state is seeking $95,534 in fines to hold them accountable.

The lawsuits, filed by Washington, D.C.’s Attorney General Brian Schwalb, target three Maryland drivers whose violations are nothing short of wild. These aren’t just minor infractions like parking tickets or expired registrations either. These individuals are accused of consistently blowing through red lights, speeding through school zones, and recklessly endangering other motorists.

Caught on Camera, Not by Cops

One of the drivers named in the lawsuits reportedly racked up a staggering 125 traffic violations, while another managed 84. The third sits between those two at 109. Of those 334 infractions, 226 are for speeding. According to court filings, they have repeatedly ignored penalties and failed to respond to citations, making them some of the most egregious offenders on the road.

It’s worth noting that the vast majority of these tickets came from red light and speeding cameras, not traditional traffic stops involving a police officer. The state, through these lawsuits, is now trying to reclaim unpaid fines and hold these drivers accountable for their reckless behavior.

Schwalb’s office emphasizes that this lawsuit isn’t just about collecting money, it’s about public safety. “Drivers who repeatedly violate traffic laws at this scale pose an enormous risk to pedestrians, cyclists, and other motorists,” he stated. The city has been trying to reduce traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries, and part of that effort includes ensuring that habitual offenders face consequences.

But with Maryland’s seemingly lax oversight on license suspensions and vehicle seizures, two things not mentioned anywhere by Schwalb or in the complaints themselves, these drivers have continued to operate vehicles with impunity. At least two “hold a Maryland driver’s license” according to court documents too so it seems as though the state hasn’t even suspended their legal right to drive.

We’ve reached out to Maryland officials for clarification and will update this story if we learn more about how these drivers managed to keep their licenses despite their extensive violations.

The Washington Post says that SpaceX and Tesla have received billions in government funding over the years.
It points out the very real and clear conflicts of interest between that and Elon Musk’s current role in the government.

Over the past twenty-plus years, companies led by Elon Musk have received at least $38 billion in government funding. That’s the headline-grabbing takeaway from a new Washington Post feature, which highlights how “government infusions at key moments helped Tesla and SpaceX flourish.”

The details are pretty clear. These brands, and Musk himself, likely wouldn’t be where they are today without such support. At the same time, none of this should surprise anyone.

The piece outlines how Elon Musk’s brands benefited greatly over the years. Sometimes, without government funding in the form of loans, subsidies, contracts, or tax credits, it’s suggested that either one could’ve failed. Musk reportedly leveraged several different agencies including the EPA, NASA, and others to keep the cash flowing. Of course, it also makes clear that nearly two-thirds of the $38 billion promised to Tesla and SpaceX came in the last five years, mostly under the Biden administration.

Of course, it’s also worth noting in all of this that Musk’s companies taking advantage of government programs are all perfectly legal and above board. What people appear to be upset about is that Musk would be open to calling out overspending by the government and somewhat recklessly cutting jobs and positions from federal agencies while accepting funding from it at the same time. These same folks appear not to understand that the two things are not mutually exclusive.

In fact, the US government hands out money to all sorts of car companies every year regardless of political leanings. In 2024, it gave Ford a $9.6 billion dollar loan (more than to Tesla and SpaceX combined last year) to build EV battery plants. The government of Michigan itself dropped $7 billion on GM in 2022 and we haven’t even discussed the cash dolled out during the 2008 financial crisis.

Strangely, the piece also calls out Tesla’s profits as a result of selling regulatory credits, something that it’s able to do because it meets or exceeds certain standards. In fact, to go further, it can only sell those credits because other automakers fail miserably to meet those same standards.

If anything, this could be viewed as proof that Musk genuinely believes in his work (over personal gain) so much that according to WaPo, he’s “sought to cut staff, slash budgets or cut contracts at all seven of the agencies where Musk’s companies have ongoing contracts.”

Ultimately, it’s clear that there are real tangible questions surrounding conflicts of interest and hypocrisy here. Musk is reportedly the one who decides where those conflicts are and then recuses himself from dealings with those activities within Doge.

Frankly, though, conflicts of interest and hypocrisy have been a main feature of basically every government ever. Regardless of his intentions, desires, or future actions, this entire situation does prove that landscapes can change quickly. Perhaps that’s no more evident than in the political landscape.

Earlier this month, we brought you the story of Makayla Starks. She bought a Nissan Rogue from Kunes Buick GMC last year and visited the dealer for a free oil change in January.

Unfortunately, Starks’ visit took a racially charged turn as her oil change sticker had the N-word printed on it. She didn’t notice this right away, but employees allegedly tried to remove the sticker before it was discovered.

The dealer eventually apologized in a since-deleted Facebook post, which said the employee was immediately terminated. However, they questionably explained the sticker was the result of an employee trying to joke with a co-worker.

Kunes Auto and RV Group eventually released another statement saying, “We are deeply disturbed and saddened by the incident.” They went on to say they offered Starks “credits for future service at other locations.”

Fast forward to today and Fox 6 is reporting that Family Nissan in New York decided to give her a new Leaf. As Family Nissan’s Ramzey Rizk told the station, “It wasn’t so much about giving her a car. It was about giving her an electric car that doesn’t need anymore oil changes ever again.”

Starks will be flying to New York soon to take delivery of the vehicle and she’s planning to get rid of the Rogue. However, she’s got a long journey ahead of her as 878 miles (1,413 miles) separate Oak Creek, Wisconsin from Inwood, New York. Considering the Leaf maxes out at 212 miles (341 km) of range, that’s a time consuming adventure.

A 72-year-old man attacked a teenager after a road rage incident in Grand Cayman.
The altercation involved a Cybertruck and a Hyundai Kona merging into the same lane.
The incident sparked public debate about the treatment of expats versus local Caymanians.

Road rage incidents are nothing new, but when they involve a Tesla Cybertruck, an elderly businessman, and a 17-year-old, they’re bound to make headlines, even in a place as laid-back as the Cayman Islands. A 72-year-old man is now at the center of a police investigation after being caught on camera attacking a motorist who reportedly cut in front of him and his Tesla Cybertruck. While police arrested the 17-year-old involved, the older driver walked away with just a warning, something that didn’t sit well with locals.

The altercation occurred about a week ago on Grand Cayman. According to local reports, Larry McGean was driving his Tesla Cybertruck with his wife when a teenage driver in a Hyundai Kona merged into his lane. McGean allegedly had to slam on the Tesla’s brakes to avoid a collision and didn’t take too kindly to the driving of the 17-year-old.

According to the Cayman Marl Road, McGean approached the driver of the Kona. Footage shared on social media shows the expat in a heated argument with the young Hyundai driver before McGean appears to open the door and lunge toward him. Although the next moments are unclear, it seems that as McGean forced his way into the cabin, the teenager quickly put him in a chokehold.

An ambulance that was passing by at the time stopped and the crew helped to separate the two men. McGean’s face was cut in the incident. Despite allegedly being the aggressor, he was let off with a warning for intended prosecution of Common Assault. In contrast, the 17-year-old driver of the Hyundai was arrested on suspicion of Assault Causing Bodily Harm.

Local police are appealing to motorists who witnessed the scuffle to get in contact with them and to provide any useful information they can. However, authorities have come under fire from many locals for not yet arresting McGean, despite footage showing his involvement in the fight. It has also raised broader concerns about how wealthy expats are treated compared to local Caymanians.

The incident continues to attract attention both online and locally, with many awaiting further updates from the police investigation.

For weeks, police in Loveland, Colorado, had been chasing down a suspect after a string of incidents against a Colorado Tesla dealership that seemed like typical, run-of-the-mill vandalism. But as it turns out, the case was far more serious than anyone could have imagined.

After several calls, multiple vandalism events, and a public plea for help, the authorities finally tracked down the culprit. What started as a few cans of spray paint quickly escalated, culminating in a shocking arrest—complete with explosives and incendiary devices discovered at the scene, at a Tesla dealership.

The First Incident – Paint, Not Explosives

All of this dates back to late January, when police responded to a call about some vandalism at the Tesla dealership on 1606 North Lincoln Ave in Loveland. While they didn’t find a suspect at the time,they did find plenty of evidence that something was amiss. It was just the first of several similar incidents, with more vandalism reported on February 2 and again on February 7.

Turning Point: The Arson Attempt

It’s that second incident in February that was the turning point though. Police report that rather than simply spray-painting “offensive and hateful” messages on cars, the perpetrator also made an attempt at arson in one form or another. According to the Seattle Times, security footage showed someone throwing what appear to be Molotov cocktails into a row of cars. The affidavit revealed that at least four cars, collectively worth $220,000, were targeted by these incendiary devices. The authorities put out a bulletin to the community asking for help in identifying the person responsible.

On February 24, they finally caught a break, apprehending the person they believe is behind it all. Identified as 40-year-old Lucy Nelson, the suspect was found with “additional incendiary devices, along with materials linked to the vandalism,” according to Loveland police. Nelson’s arrest affidavit suggests she may not have acted alone, as surveillance footage shows another individual, with a different build, who is also suspected of involvement.

“These incidents were not only unlawful, dangerous, and unsettling, they also created an atmosphere of discomfort and worry,” Loveland PD Public Information Officer Chris Padgett told CNN. “Those who work at the business, along with those living in the community, have had to deal with such concerns since the first incident on January 29th,” he added.

A Long List of Charges

That said, Nelson is now facing a laundry list of charges, including the use of explosives or incendiary devices during a felony, criminal mischief involving damages between $2,000 and $5,000, and an attempted Class 3 felony. The Larimer County Magistrate has set her bond at $100,000 cash surety.

This is, of course, just one small chapter in the larger, ongoing saga of vandalism and protests tied to Tesla and Elon Musk right now.

Tesla itself has made it clear that they will prosecute anyone who damages their property—specifically, Supercharger stations, which have been a frequent target of vandalism lately. We imagine that Tesla might be willing to go after Nelson with the same tenacity. But for Tesla owners whose cars are damaged in these incidents? Well, you’re pretty much left to pick up the pieces for now.

No other automotive CEO draws as much attention as he does and lately, it hasn’t been for the reasons he might hope. After several questionable actions by the boss at Tesla, he’s found himself at the center of yet another controversy, this time in the form of an ad campaign that’s got Londoners raising an eyebrow or two. And no, it’s not another SpaceX launch.

This time, it takes the form of what appears to be a well-executed advertising campaign that has gone viral. Located at the Pollard Row bus stop in London, UK, it has been up for only a short time but is already drawing quite a bit of attention

“Goes From 0 To 1939 In 3 Seconds,” says the ad, alluding to Musk’s perceived fandom of Nazis and Adolf Hitler. Below the wordmark is a depiction of Musk and his now-infamous gesture at a U.S. political event. A Model X appears too with the words “Tesla The Swasticar,” beneath Musk.

The phrase ‘swasticar’ is becoming more and more common among those who disagree with Musk’s politics. The group taking responsibility for the ad offers merchandise including stickers with the phrase “Don’t Buy A Swasticar” along with another depiction of Musk. It also allegedly sells the poster ad seen in London via PDF on its website, though we couldn’t find it.

Notably, the stickers and ad aren’t the only actions the campaigners have taken. They’ve also delivered a cardboard cutout of Musk making that gesture to a Tesla dealership and set it up in the lobby. An online GoFundMe campaign for the group aims to raise £10,000 (the current goal), but it’s unclear exactly what for.

“We’ve plastered ‘don’t buy a swasticar’ stickers across hundreds of Teslas in London and taken a cardboard cutout of Elon Musk to a Tesla dealership – prompting customers to tell us to “f**k off” because they’re offended for some reason… We’re planning more – but we need to raise at least £20k to help us fund the actions we have planned. Are you in?”

The group has raised £9,252 from 500 donations so far, toward their £10,000 goal. Of all the protesting organizations out there, this one seems to have more staying power than most. Others appear to be just individuals upset with Musk or small groups making seemingly idle threats. Whether it’s more stickers, more cardboard Musk statues, or just more general mayhem, we’re not sure—but you can bet it’ll be entertaining.
