As Tesla’s Full Self-Driving is enabled in the United States, and a variant of it launched in China earlier this week, many European owners are still awaiting the launch of what is one of the most robust driver assistance programs in the world.

But CEO Elon Musk finally clarified what the holdup was, especially as Tesla outlined last year that it planned to bring Full Self-Driving, or at least a version of it, to the European market where the company has performed so well for so many years.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" data-ad-layout="in-article" data-ad-format="fluid" data-ad-client="ca-pub-4672671650557568" data-ad-slot="7845413937"></ins>

Musk said that the automaker is awaiting regulatory approval to launch FSD in Europe, something that was a major bottleneck for China but was eventually worked through.

Europe seems to be awaiting the same fate for Tesla, as many owners are sure it will be available soon, but the exact date is still up in the air and is being worked out between Tesla and European regulatory agencies:

We are waiting for regulatory approval

— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) February 28, 2025

We reached out to Tesla and Elon Musk to see if there was any information on how long they have been waiting for a response from European regulatory agencies about a license to operate FSD on the continent. We have not yet received a response, but if we do, we will update the article.

Tesla stands to benefit from a rollout of Full Self-Driving, or at least some sort of version of it, in Europe. The company has dominated the EU in terms of EV sales for some time, and 2024 was no different. Tesla owned 15.8 percent of the market in 2024, EU-EVs data shows, dominating mainstays like Volkswagen, BMW, and Volvo, all of whom trailed the company in total registrations last year.

There are several companies out there with self-driving vehicles and licenses in Europe, Ford being one of them as the Mustang Mach-E was approved for operation at a Level 2 basis back in 2023. Tesla could be one of the more well-rounded suites out there, but it remains to be seen which permissions it has for operation in the region, as it offered a different version in China than what is available in the U.S.

“I can’t stress enough how vital grants like these are and the need for continued support from our partners in government at the state and federal level to fund additional grants for school districts and their transportation partners that are ready to deliver and operate zero-emission buses,” said Tim Wertner, CEO of Durham School Services.

CUSD, which serves Compton and parts of the cities of Carson and Los Angeles, currently serves more than 17,000 students at 36 sites. The district has a high school graduation rate of 93% and an 88% college acceptance rate. One in 11 children in Los Angeles County have asthma, which makes the need for emissions-free school transportation that much more pressing.

SpaceX is set to launch its eighth test flight of the Starship rocket this Friday. Ahead of the most recent test in what could be the most revolutionary spaceflight program since NASA’s Apollo, SpaceX is clearing the air about what went wrong during its previous test flight, which resulted in the loss of the second stage during its ascension.

On January 16, SpaceX successfully launched Starship while also completing its second successful catch of the lower-stage booster.

However, the flight did not go as smoothly as initially anticipated, as the company lost Starship’s upper stage roughly eight minutes and twenty seconds into flight.

Now, the company is clarifying what happened that led to the demise of the upper stage, which SpaceX has identified with the recognition of “flashes” that occurred after vehicle separation.

SpaceX says that a flash was observed roughly two minutes into its burn after vehicle separation. The flash, along with sensors that was a pressure rise in the attic, indicated a leak:

“Approximately two minutes into its burn, a flash was observed in the aft section of the vehicle near one of the Raptor vacuum engines. This aft section, commonly referred to as the attic, is an unpressurized area between the bottom of the liquid oxygen tank and the aft heatshield. Sensors in the attic detected a pressure rise indicative of a leak after the flash was seen.”

This was not the only flash that was observed. Two minutes after the first, another flash was seen, but this one was followed by sustained fires in the attic. These fires caused Starship’s engines to perform a controlled shutdown:

“These eventually caused all but one of Starship’s engines to execute controlled shut down sequences and ultimately led to a loss of communication with the ship. Telemetry from the vehicle was last received just over eight minutes and 20 seconds into flight.”

SpaceX clarified that Starship was destroyed and communication with the ship was lost before it was able to initiate any destruct rules for its Autonomous Flight Safety System. The company said this was “fully healthy when communication was lost.”

It went on to say that the “most probable root cause” of the loss was likely due to an environment not seen during testing:

“The most probable root cause for the loss of ship was identified as a harmonic response several times stronger in flight than had been seen during testing, which led to increased stress on hardware in the propulsion system. The subsequent propellant leaks exceeded the venting capability of the ship’s attic area and resulted in sustained fires.”

Nevertheless, Starship will launch for the eighth time soon, with CEO Elon Musk noting that the most likely date will be Friday. This could be the second of potentially 25 Starship launches planned for 2025.

Aventon, one of the most well-known players in the US electric bicycle market, has announced the launch of its latest model, the Level 3. A smart e-bike designed for modern commuters, the Level 3 is packed with advanced security features, extended range capabilities, and comfort-focused components. It’s all part of the new Aventon Control Unit (ACU), which serves as the central brain of the smart bike, and helps it offer new standards in daily riding and commuting convenience.

The Level 3 marks Aventon’s second e-bike equipped with the Aventon Control Unit, a smart bike technology system that provides a suite of advanced theft deterrent features. The ACU offers geofencing, GPS tracking, remote locking, and a passcode system, ensuring riders can park and leave their e-bikes with confidence. The real-time bike stats accessible through GPS tracking and a 4G connection also allow users to monitor their rides with ease.

Built with intuitive geometry and a comfortable riding position, the Level 3 seems to add additional focus on providing a smooth and enjoyable everday experience for commuters. The inclusion of a front suspension fork and a suspension seat post with 50mm of travel are both nods toward comfort, even on rough urban roads that many of us would consider akin to light off-roading. The adjustable stem also allows riders to fine-tune the handlebar position for a personalized fit, further increasing the comfort and customizability of the bike.

Powering the Level 3 is a 500W, 36V hub-drive motor that delivers 60Nm of torque, with peak output reaching a claimed 864W. This is an interesting choice as it technically represents a reduction in system voltage for the Level 3, compared to the 48V system found in most of Aventon’s other e-bikes, including the Level 2 that preceded this one. However, Aventon still claims that the motor is robust enough to ensure riders can tackle steep inclines and flat roads alike without breaking a sweat.

Advertisement – scroll for more content

The top speed of the Level 3 is listed at 20 mph (32 km/h), and so it appears that the Class 3 option on the previous version of the bike hasn’t made the jump to the Level 3. At 20 mph on throttle or pedal assist, the Level 3 will operate in either Class 1 or Class 2 mode, but not Class 3. This may be an attempt to fall in line with increasingly strict e-bike regulations that have begun in California and may spread further in the US.

The Level 3 also claims an impressive range of up to 70 miles (112 km) on a single charge. While that marks an increase in range, the battery is listed at 36V and 20Ah, which is roughly similar in capacity to the 48V 15Ah battery from the Level 2.

Next-Gen Security and Connectivity

The performance specs may not be leaps and bounds above the Level 2, but the Level 3’s technology suite is certainly a major upgrade. As Aventon’s CEO JW Zhang expalined, “We are excited to announce our second addition of next-generation e-bikes with our ACU technology. We are setting new standards on what a smart bike means to our modern customers, elevating their riding experiences.”

With its advanced security suite, the Level 3 is said to provide unparalleled peace of mind for e-bike owners who are rightfully worried about the risk of bike theft. The ACU’s Remote Lock feature allows riders to disable the motor remotely, while geofencing alerts users if the bike leaves a designated area. Passcode protection adds an extra layer of security, making unauthorized use nearly impossible.

That won’t prevent thieves from carrying the bike away, so a good lock is still a must, but thieves in the know may soon learn to leave the bikes alone if they won’t be able to operate it and fleece it for a good price afterward.

The Level 3 is available in four color options: Glacier Mint, Sandstone, Matte Black, and Matte Aurora. Riders can choose between Step-Through and Step-Over frame designs, ensuring a better fit for a wide range of users.

The MSRP for the Level 3 is listed at $1,899, with preorders available now and shipping expected in April.

The Tesla Cybertruck has earned a “Best Tech” award from one automotive publication, along with a major shout-out to one particular chassis feature that the company employed in a complete shift away from industry norms.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" data-ad-layout="in-article" data-ad-format="fluid" data-ad-client="ca-pub-4672671650557568" data-ad-slot="7845413937"></ins>

On Tuesday, Motortrend called the Cybertruck the “Best Tech” winner for its chassis technology, and specifically for the electric truck’s unique steer-by-wire system. Unlike most vehicles, the Cybertruck features no physical connection or traditional steering column between the steering wheel and the front wheels, making turning and tight maneuvers more doable than in a traditional truck, let alone even smaller vehicles.

As such, Motortrend highlights Tesla’s subtle “reinventing of the wheel” with the steer-by-wire system as making for a super-responsive steering experience, even being a somewhat-large pickup.

“By completely removing the mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the front tires, Tesla fundamentally reimagined the rack-and-pinion steering the auto industry has spent nearly 100 years refining,” writes Motortrend’s Eric Tingwall. “That change unlocks real, tangible benefits. Thanks to steer-by-wire, Tesla’s 6,900-pound stainless-steel megalith moves with uncanny agility.”

The write-up also emphasizes the publication’s initial skepticism toward a non-traditional steering column, with Tingwall noting that “several of those skeptics didn’t even make it out of the parking lot without becoming believers.” Additionally, the award comes with more acknowledgement of Tesla’s attempts to break the mold of vehicle design, even with something so ubiquitous like traditional steering.

The announcement also garnered a response from Lead Cybertruck Engineer Wes Morrill, who gave the Tesla engineering team a shout-out for building the system, and the publication for its inclusion of a few more technical details. He also shared a graphic comparing roadwheel and handwheel angle on the Cybertruck across a few different terrain types, which you can see below.

A primary benefit of steer-by-wire, as previously detailed Morrill, is its variable-ratio steering, which can be set to virtually any sensitivity, unlike a traditional steering column.

“Steer by wire and modern power assist steering are both doing the majority of the work for the driver and can have the same responsiveness and road feedback; in fact, you could amplify the feedback if desired,” Morrill said in a post on X last March in defense of a steer-by-wire system. “The main difference is that steer by wire can have a variable steering ratio which is better for low speeds. You could make a steer-by-wire system behave exactly like a power-assisted system if that’s what you really wanted to do.”

Lennox Residential HVAC has launched an extreme cold climate heat pump that warms a house with low global warming potential (GWP) refrigerant in temperatures as low as -20F.

It’s called the Dave Lennox Signature® Collection SL22KLV Cold Climate Heat Pump, and Lennox claims its efficiency levels are 150% higher at colder temperatures than standard heat pumps.

In 2022, Lennox was the first company to complete the first phase of the US Department of Energy’s (DOE) Residential Cold Climate Heat Pump (CCHP) Technology Challenge, and the SL22KLV is a souped up version of the unit developed for that challenge.

The heat pump, which pairs with a smart thermostat, uses a variable-speed compressor with Electronic Refrigerant Injection (ERI) to adjust the energy usage based on the outside temperature, which helps to lower energy costs. When the temperature drops, the ERI increases heating output efficiently.

Advertisement – scroll for more content

The SL22KLV has efficiency ratings of up to 21.10 for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio 2 (SEER2), 13.2 for Energy Efficiency Ratio 2 (EER2), and 10.50 for Heating Seasonal Performance Factor 2 (HSPF2). It also features a precision-balanced, direct-drive fan and sound-dampening system for ultra-quiet operation as low as 58 decibels.

The heating capacity is between 21,600 Btuh and 60,000 Btuh, and the cooling capacity is between 22,000 Btuh and 56,000 Btuh.

Lennox’s new extreme cold heat pump uses the low global warming potential R-454B refrigerant, reducing environmental impact without compromising performance. It’s also eligible for the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit, a federal IRA tax credit for homeowners (and it’s still in place). There may also be other local utility and state incentives for installing a heat pump, so it’s definitely worth checking. It’s now available for order through local Lennox dealers.

Zevtron, ParkMobile, and Athena Partners Strategy Group is deploying Zevtron’s white-label EV charging software across the former Shell Recharge network to restore full operational capacity to these chargers.

“Shell’s exit has left hundreds of chargers effectively stranded,” said Chris Mckenty, SVP of sales & marketing at Zevtron. “Our goal is to rapidly restore these stations to full functionality while enhancing their capabilities with flexible branding, seamless payment options, and improved management tools.”

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi says that Musk was not interested in talking about utilizing the Uber platform for Tesla’s future robotaxis, as detailed in a recent report from Fortune. Khosrowshahi says that he has spoken with Musk and that the company is looking to stay in-house with the robotaxi, which is consistent with its recent release and longtime teasing of a ride-hailing platform.

The executive also points to Tesla’s competitive status with Alphabet-owned Waymo, which is currently already operating paid driverless ride-hailing services in a handful of cities in the U.S.

“I’ve had conversations with him at this point,” Khosrowshahi said on Friday, during an interview with Bloomberg TV in Miami. “They want to build it alone, so to some extent in Austin, we and Waymo will be competing with Tesla when they launch… Life is long, but we would love to partner with them.”

Despite this, Khosrowshahi said that it could make “a lot of economic sense” for the companies to work together, and for Uber’s platform to support Tesla’s initial robotaxi rollout.

“What we bring is demand to the AV ecosystem when demand often is quite variable.”

Tesla initially shared a teasers of a mobile app UI for ride-hailing last April during the company’s Q1 2024 shareholder’s deck. The company has also said that it’s already testing a ride-hailing service with employees in both the Bay Area, California and in Texas, near its Fremont and Austin factories.

It also comes after Tesla revealed its two-seat, steering wheel-less “Cybercab” in October, on which Teslarati reported from the “We, Robot” unveiling event.

The Cybercab’s eventual wide-scale release, alongside expected “Unsupervised” versions of Full Self Driving (FSD) — which are slated to start rolling out this June — are in direct competition with Waymo, Amazon-owned Zoox, Uber’s ride-hailing software, and a handful of other companies in the emerging ride-hailing and driverless robotaxi businesses.

Tesla also started alluding to a mobile ride-hailing app in its source code earlier this month, quietly deploying an upcoming screen that will let users rate their ride-hailing experiences—though it isn’t expected to go full consumer mode anytime soon.

SpaceX’s Starship will soon be lifting off for its eighth test flight, according to federal airspace advisory listings, as the Elon Musk-headed company will look to rebound from its most recent launch that ended in the destruction of its rocket.

SpaceX has listed its launch window as starting on Wednesday, February 26, at 5:30 p.m. EST. The company will look to launch between then and on any of the various backup opportunities that will be available through Thursday, March 6.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" data-ad-layout="in-article" data-ad-format="fluid" data-ad-client="ca-pub-4672671650557568" data-ad-slot="7845413937"></ins>

Coming off of what is one of its most eventful missions yet with the seventh Starship launch, the company is going to look to improve in one facet while aiming to repeat another. First, SpaceX said it is aiming to complete yet another catch of the first-stage booster, something it has now accomplished on two other occasions.

However, the last launch also resulted in the complete loss of the rocket itself, which was destroyed during its ascension phase. Debris from the exploded rocket fell over the Caribbean island of Turks and Caicos, lighting up the sky in what was a stunning display of a learning experience for the aerospace company:

🚨Absolutely insane video of Starship coming down over Turks & Caicospic.twitter.com/28wfgdKJuN

The only thing that would potentially delay Starship’s next launch is the lack of closure to the previous investigation, which dealt with finding the reasoning for the rocket’s explosion.

SpaceX aimed to explain what happened shortly after the destruction of Starship after the seventh test flight:

“Following stage separation, the Starship upper stage successfully lit all six Raptor engines and performed its ascent burn to space. Prior to the burn’s completion, telemetry was lost with the vehicle after approximately eight and a half minutes of flight. Initial data indicates a fire developed in the aft section of the ship, leading to a rapid unscheduled disassembly with debris falling into the Atlantic Ocean within the predefined hazard areas.”

Musk also said that a leak of oxygen or fuel in the cavity above the ship engine firewall could have been responsible for the loss.

He also expected Starship to return to launch in February.
